The Fudoshin Tenugui is a high-quality cotton Japanese Tenugui featuring the Kanji for “immovable mind” (Fudoshin / 不動心). Fudoshin is one of the most well-known mental states associated with Budo and martial arts training, representing the ability to remain calm, focused, and mentally centred even under pressure.
In martial arts, this unwavering state of mind is developed through consistent training in the Dojo and on the Shiaijo. The Fudoshin Tenugui is a practical training accessory that reflects this important principle of Japanese Budo.
A Tenugui is a traditional Japanese hand cloth, typically made from lightweight, highly absorbent cotton. In martial arts, Tenugui are commonly used to absorb sweat during training, worn around the head in Kendo, or kept inside the Keikogii for quick and convenient access. Beyond martial arts, they can also be used as a lightweight towel or general-purpose cloth.
Despite its thin construction, the cotton fabric is highly absorbent and dries quickly. Its lightweight design means it folds easily and can be slipped inside a Keikogi, making it particularly useful during demanding training sessions when managing sweat and staying comfortable is important.
The Fudoshin Tenugui is an ideal choice for Kendo practitioners, martial artists, Budo students, Dojo members, and anyone interested in traditional Japanese martial arts culture. It combines everyday practicality with the deeper philosophy of Fudoshin — maintaining an immovable, composed mind in the face of challenge. It also makes a thoughtful gift for martial artists and anyone who appreciates Japanese culture, traditional textiles, and the philosophy behind Fudoshin.

- Wash before first use to remove any excess dye or finishing residue.
- Machine wash or hand wash in cool or lukewarm water.
- Wash dark or brightly coloured Tenugui separately during the first few washes, as some colour bleeding may occur.
- Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Avoid high-temperature washing, which may cause slight shrinkage or affect the print.
- Smooth out wrinkles by stretching the edges while the cloth is still wet.
- Air dry naturally whenever possible. Hang or lay flat to dry.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly with richly coloured or printed designs, as this may cause fading.
Important Note
Tenugui are traditionally unfinished along the cut edges. The edges may initially fray slightly after washing, this is normal. Simply trim any long loose threads if necessary; do not pull them.
Expect natural changes with use. Traditional tenugui can soften and develop a distinctive character over time
