The Tombo Tenugui is a traditional Japanese cotton hand cloth featuring a distinctive Tombo (dragonfly) pattern on a classic navy blue background. Lightweight, practical, and highly absorbent, this tenugui is designed for martial arts training as well as everyday use.
The Tombo (蜻蛉), or dragonfly, is a well-known motif in Japanese culture and has a particularly strong connection with Japanese martial arts and Budo. The dragonfly is often associated with determination and forward movement, making the Tombo Tenugui a fitting accessory for training in the Dojo.
A Tenugui is a traditional Japanese hand cloth made from lightweight cotton. In Kendo, it is commonly worn around the head beneath the Men to absorb sweat during training. Tenugui are also widely used in other martial arts, often kept inside the Gi as a thin, convenient towel for removing sweat during demanding training sessions.
Its thin cotton construction makes the Tombo Tenugui lightweight, easy to carry, and simple to fold inside a Gi or training bag. It can also be used as a hand towel, training cloth, travel towel, or general-purpose cloth.
With its classic navy blue colour and printed dragonfly pattern, the Tombo Tenugui combines traditional Japanese aesthetics with practical functionality, making it an excellent choice for Kendo practitioners, Budo students, martial artists, and anyone interested in Japanese culture.

- Wash before first use to remove any excess dye or finishing residue.
- Machine wash or hand wash in cool or lukewarm water.
- Wash dark or brightly coloured Tenugui separately during the first few washes, as some colour bleeding may occur.
- Use a mild detergent and avoid bleach or harsh chemicals.
- Avoid high-temperature washing, which may cause slight shrinkage or affect the print.
- Smooth out wrinkles by stretching the edges while the cloth is still wet.
- Air dry naturally whenever possible. Hang or lay flat to dry.
- Avoid prolonged direct sunlight, particularly with richly coloured or printed designs, as this may cause fading.
Important Note
Tenugui are traditionally unfinished along the cut edges. The edges may initially fray slightly after washing, this is normal. Simply trim any long loose threads if necessary; do not pull them.
Expect natural changes with use. Traditional tenugui can soften and develop a distinctive character over time
